What is Recycled Asphalt Millings used for?

Recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) that hardens over time — the most durable and cost-effective option for long driveways, parking pads, and rural access roads.

Long driveways & rural lanes
Millings compact firm initially and the residual bitumen binder activates with heat and traffic to create a semi-hard, asphalt-like surface — ideal for long residential driveways and farm lanes.
Parking pads & staging areas
Provides a firm, durable base for parking areas where full asphalt paving is not justified. Compacts well under vehicle loads and requires far less maintenance than loose gravel.
Road repair & pothole patching
Existing asphalt driveways and roads can be topped with a layer of millings to fill ruts, potholes, and degraded surface areas at a fraction of the cost of new paving.
Sub-base stabilization
Used by contractors as a cost-effective, recycled sub-base layer beneath new asphalt or concrete paving where a compacted, stable base is needed over unstable soil.
Access roads on job sites
Temporary and permanent construction site access roads built with millings resist ruts, drain reasonably, and can be maintained easily with a grader over the life of a project.
Gravel road resurfacing
Applied over existing gravel or dirt roads, millings reduce dust, improve traction, and extend road life significantly — making them popular for municipal and county road maintenance.
Not ideal for these applications:
  • Not ideal for areas requiring a fully sealed impermeable surface
  • Not ideal for high-traffic commercial paving requiring strict surface uniformity
  • Not ideal for areas with frequent freeze-thaw cycles (heaving risk)
  • Not ideal for drainage applications (too dense when compacted)

Frequently asked questions

Asphalt millings, also called recycled asphalt pavement (RAP), are produced by milling the surface of old asphalt roads and parking lots. The result is a crushed mix of asphalt chunks and aggregate with 4–7% residual bitumen binder. When compacted, the binder activates under heat and traffic to create a semi-hard, asphalt-like surface.
