What is Commercial Screenings used for?

3/8" minus crushed stone screenings — the fine, angular dust-and-chip blend that compacts firm and levels smooth for paver bases, joint filling, and hardscape foundations.

Paver & patio base layer
Angular particles and fines compact to a tight, stable base for pavers, flagstone, and patio blocks. Levels easily and locks in place without shifting under foot or vehicle traffic.
Joint filling between pavers
Fine texture flows into gaps between pavers and stepping stones, locking them in alignment and preventing weed infiltration when compacted and dampened.
Driveway topping & grading
Fills ruts and low spots in gravel driveways and provides a fine-textured, compactable top layer that smooths rough surfaces and resists erosion.
Pipe bedding & trench backfill
Well-graded screenings provide firm, even support around buried pipes and utility conduits, conforming to pipe contours and preventing point loading.
Equestrian arena flooring
Compactable fine texture creates a firm, non-shifting arena floor surface that provides consistent footing for horses while draining adequately.
Concrete slab underlayment
Creates a stable, level sub-base directly beneath concrete slabs where a clean stone layer is needed before the pour.
Not ideal for these applications:
  • Not ideal for rapid drainage (use 57 stone)
  • Not ideal for sandblasting or abrasive applications
  • Not ideal for children's play areas (fines and dust)
  • Not ideal for concrete mixes without strict gradation testing

Frequently asked questions

Commercial screenings, also called stone dust or 3/8" minus, are the finest byproduct of the stone crushing process. They consist of angular fragments and fine dust particles up to 3/8" (9.5 mm) in size. When spread and compacted, they bind together to create a dense, stable base that resists movement and settles to a smooth, firm surface.
